Teachers' Closet

HAVE A PEEK INTO OUR SPECIAL CLOSET (Open every Thursday that school is in session – from 3:30 until 5:30) One of the most important jobs that anyone can have is that of being a teacher.  It can also be one of the most difficult, especially in this economy.  Many parents have a difficult time providing all of the necessary school supplies for their children.  At the same time, school budgets are being cut to the bone, making it impossible for the schools to provide all of the supplies for their classrooms.  To fill this void, many wonderful teachers have been providing supplies for their classrooms and students out of their own salaries.  But as the budget cuts keep coming and the economy stays down, the teachers are feeling pressured to keep up and their own funds are getting scarce.

Knowing the problems facing teachers and students today gave Peace Lutheran Church in Oshkosh WI a chance to use outreach to benefit education in their area.  The congregation has established a “Teachers’ Closet” which has just about any supplies that a teacher or student might need to succeed in their classrooms.  These supplies are generously donated by the members of Peace Lutheran Church and other churches, especially their neighbor, First English Lutheran Church.  Money has also been generously donated by individuals and from the estate of one of Peace’s members who loved the children in her neighborhood school.

Some of the supplies in the Teachers’ Closet are for basic use, such as pencils, pens, notebooks, paper, glue, crayons and markers.  Other supplies are for classroom use, such as staplers and staples, tape dispensers and tape, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, first aid supplies, spray disinfectant, and paper towels and white board markers and erasers. Donations of children’s books and magazines are used by the students during their free time.  The teachers say that the kids love reading about animals, other lands and people they can look up to, among other things. Other items in the Teachers’ Closet can be used for special projects, like felt, easel flip chart paper and reams of paper. The Teachers’ Closet has also been lucky enough to have some percussion instruments donated that the teachers were very happy to receive.  We have given out bongo drums, castanets, finger cymbals, xylophones, triangles, tambourines and other instruments that can be used by the teachers as “attention-getters” and also by the students. The final category of items in the Teachers’ Closet is craft items that can be used for special projects or art classes.  We have old magazines and calendars for cutting up, all colors of construction paper, poster-board, beads, yarn, ribbon, cardboard, shoe boxes, stickers, glitter, tissue paper, sequins, buttons and other craft and art items.

Public and parochial teachers in Oshkosh, Omro and Winneconne WI are invited come to The Teachers’ Closet and take any supplies that they can use - for FREE!  The only prerequisite is that they only take what they can use and that they sign our sign-in sheet listing their name, school and grade – so that we can see which teachers and grades are in the greatest need of assistance.

Visitor/Bakers
Visitor/Baking Coordinator: Joy
As part of this ministry, the bakers bake items that are given to our first-time visitors as a token of our hospitality and friendship. This ministry is important because it would be easy for newcomers to "get lost" within the membership of those who know each other. Our goal is to reach out to them with a tangible token of friendship that tells them we're glad they came to worship with us. We want them to feel truly welcomed!

THANKS to all of you who so generously are involved in this ministry!

The following is a schedule for visitors and bakers. If the date doesn't work for you,
please switch with someone from the list. After you switch, please call the church office (231-4730) with the change. You are encouraged to visit people out of city limits within reason.

If you are scheduled as a visitor during a holiday, feel free to make the visits during the week at your convenience. The visits do not need to be made on Sunday.
